STEM Lab - Hilary Melon

Hilary.Melon@houstonisd.org

Part makerspace, part computer lab, part art studio; STEM Lab is all about creativity and innovation. While there is certainly an emphasis on the elements of the STEM acronym (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, the cross-curricular nature of the learning units means the lab is truly an all-subjects classroom. Students use digital tools such as Scratch, Make Code, Scratch Jr, Code.org, and Python as well as physical materials (ranging from Legos to cereal boxes) to design and build projects that communicate their ideas and share their learning. Physical computing, creating projects that incorporate both digital and physical elements, is introduced with devices like the Raspberry Pi, Makey Makey, Micro:bit, and Robo-Mouse. Recent projects include cardboard arcade games, digital dioramas, mini-museum rooms, interactive posters, and origami animals.

Music Composition & Performance Studio – Adrian Ramirez

Adrian.Ramirez@houstonisd.org

Performing in an ensemble setting, students learn important collaborative and analytical skills. Sinclair musicians explore music through play, practice games to enhance music literacy, and pair technology with instruments and singing to produce unique compositions.

Art, Appreciation & Analysis Art – Tomas Feijo

TFEIJO@houstonisd.org

Young artists will participate in hands-on experiences to create art, focusing on the process rather than the product, while also growing their knowledge of famous artists, artworks, and art fundamentals. Art provides a creative outlet for students in a space that nurtures growth in skills, allows for exploration of materials, and permits students to "make mistakes" through self-discovery.

Digital Media & Publications Workshop – Nyree Doucette

NDOUCETT@houstonisd.org

Working with multimedia and graphics software, students demonstrate impressive journalistic and publishing skills. Alumni's works encompass publication of books, newspapers, magazines, brochures, audio-visual presentations, blogs, and web design.

Digital Projects

Rainbow the Dragon and The Bandit Escapes are 4th-grade projects. The students came up with a movie idea. For the first part of the project, they used Canva to make a movie poster. And for the second part of the project, they create a movie trailer and incorporate the poster into the video. Some of the students also use AI to create their artwork in the video. See some of our sample projects below!

Pizza-Making Teddy Bear and Moon Cheese are 5th-grade projects. The students came up with an original product and made a commercial. Some of the students also used AI to create their product.
